Reiki is an ancient healing art dating back 5000 years. It originated in Tibet and was re-introduced into society in Japan in the 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui was a respected theology scholar. He spent time studying at a temple on Mt. Kurama, and traveled all over the world. Over time, his students inquired of the healing techniques used by Buddha and Jesus. This led Dr. Usui on a ten year search for these truths. Dr. Usui discovered Sanskrit formulas and symbols that seemed to hold the answers to the healing formula. Dr. Usui knew that all of the keys to the art of Reiki were within the Sanskrit. The language at that time was 2500 years old, which made the exact translation quite difficult, even after engaging the help of other world scholars. Confounded by his lack of viable options, Dr. Usui returned to The Holy Mountain of Koriyanna (the original name) to meditate and pray. On the 21st day during meditation, he connected with our universal energy source and information regarding the symbols and Reiki techniques were revealed to him. Dr. Mikao Usui opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo in 1922. In the late 1930’s an American lady from Hawaii, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, was healed of a serious tumor at the Reiki Clinic in Tokyo. She decided to dedicate her life to Reiki. Mrs. Takata finished her training just before the war. She was encouraged by her instructor Dr. Chujiro Hayashi to take her knowledge back to the west and preserve the tradition. Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is the name of the society founded by Dr. Usui for practicing Reiki.
